The Sound Of Silence – It Is Deafening

This is on repeat because it fits right now.

The Sound Of Silence

By Disturbed

Hello darkness, my old friend
I’ve come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence

In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
‘Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dared
Disturb the sound of silence

Fools, said I, you do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you
But my words, like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sounds of silence

      1. When I downloaded this song from them, the first I’ve ever known of Disturbed, I also downloaded The Light from the same album. Something in it speaks to me in a way I’m afraid to acknowledge.

      2. I just listened to The Light and I really like it. This band is not usually one that I listen to (back when I was younger I know it would have been in my mix tapes. Lol) but these two songs are on my playlist now.

      3. I first heard their version of Sound of Silence on Conan, I blogged about it because I was so struck by it. I’d never heard of Disturbed or David Draiman. I reposted a video on FB of it, asking how it was possible I’d never heard this man sing and what kind of music was this. The first person to reply was my cousin and as soon as I saw his name, I was like, metal, of course. I only own the two songs but I wouldn’t be surprised if more of them show up eventually. I’m glad/not surprised you like it.

  1. Such an interesting choice to strip out the harmonies completely. In the original, those two winsome voices cleave together and make the meaning of the words bittersweet. This version is aggressive, it has a whole different thrust. Or I am just old.

    1. I had someone else also recommend listening to The Light by the same band. I am not a huge fan of this band but both those songs have now made my Playlist. Give it a listen.

  2. Who wrote this originally? I havent listened to Disturbed in so long, they used to be one of my favourite bands.. love the songs Voices, The Game, and Down with the sickness- was such a good album 🙂 Take care.

  3. It’s a very good cover, indeed. But, give the original song a try, too. It’s by Simon and Garfunkel. Listen to the crisp voice of Art Garfunkel. The lyrics were written by Paul Simon. Plus, find the explanation Paul gave about his intention while writing the song.

  4. I like this cover but the lyrics are not by Disturbed. All kudos goes to the OP, or lyricist/songwriter, Paul Simon:

“The Sound of Silence”, originally “The Sounds of Silence”, is a song by the American music duo Simon & Garfunkel. The song was written by Paul Simon over a period of several months in 1963 and 1964. A studio audition led to the duo signing a record deal with Columbia Records, and the song was recorded in March 1964 at Columbia Studios in New York City for inclusion on their debut album, Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.

This happens a lot in the music industry, the credit goes to the person who covered it, the money goes to the record company and the artist who created the work is often forgotten. That said Paul Simon is pretty astute and doing well. 🙂

  5. Hi, thanks for following my blog. I am now following yours. This was the first piece I read and really liked it. I hope you are still writing, this is from August. I would like to read more, so I need to catch up on the older stuff. I am so far behind in reading, it may take me awhile. Nice to meet you.

      1. There are actually two versions by Simon and Garfunkel. The original is all acoustic. They added the electric later. It was not a hit until then.

  6. Was a high school assignment to write an essay on this song. Maybe the first time I figured out I was to be a writer when I grew up. Dunno, but I always think of that when I hear this song.

  7. I have to admit I am a bit of a purest when it comes to music but Disturbed did an excellent job on this classic. I always loved the original but their cover ads a new dimension and depth to an already poignant song.
    Thank you for sharing!

  8. First of all, thank you so much for stopping by my blog. As for this post, I love the original lyrics of this song. The new version and the video are nice too. The video photography is especially well done. However, and probably because I am a great lover of the original song “The Sound Of Silence” by Simon and Garfunkel, I find it difficult to appreciate this new version.

  9. I always loved Simon and Garfunkel, and have been so sad that we rarely hear their music today. I don’t think that as a band, they ever did a bad song, and even when they were each on their own, that music produced was wonderful as well.
